Our Association
"Voluntariado Jesús con los Niños" (VJCN) was founded on January 27, 1997, by Mrs. Xenia Gell and a group of ladies who joined forces to assist children admitted to the Regional University Children's Hospital Doctor Arturo Grullón in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic. As a result of the Volunteer's involvement in the hospital, a small unit dedicated to the hospitalization of burned children was created. This unit had only one room of approximately 25 square meters, with about six beds, where children were treated, and hospitalizations were managed.
The Volunteer initiative propelled the construction of a burn unit equipped with the space, facilities, comfort, and necessary staff to carry out the delicate task of burn care. In March 2005, the Burn Unit "Dra. Thelma Rosario" opened its doors. It features an operating room, dressing rooms with hydrotherapy, and eight properly equipped and decorated rooms for the appropriate care and treatment of burned children. Additionally, it is equipped with modern facilities and highly qualified staff—the "Dra. Thelma Rosario" Burn Unit serves as a model throughout the country, being the only one specializing in treating burns in children.
In 2005, with the closure of the pediatric ward at the Oncological Institute of Santiago, patients from the oncology department were placed in the same room initially designated for burn patients. In 2008, the construction of the Hemato-Oncology Unit began a three-story building inaugurated on March 4, 2010, thanks to contributions from the Dougthy Foundation and "Caminantes por la Vida" (Walkers for Life).
Today, the Hemato-Oncology Unit is an institution that serves children from the 13 regions of Cibao. Our partnership with the St. Jude Foundation allows us to stay at the forefront, apply the best treatments to our children, and provide continuous education for our healthcare staff. We also benefit from the services of congregación Siervas de Jesús (Sisters of Jesus congregation), who manage the pharmacy and oversee the general operation of the unit. Thanks to the contributions of individuals, groups, and companies, the Voluntariado Jesús con los Niños fulfills its objective of assisting those in need.
